Life looked great on paper. I married my wife in 2006.

Our first daughter, Olivia, was born soon after, and I felt on top of the world. By 2011, with our second daughter Alexia, I thought I was living my dream.

But beneath it all, I was breaking down. My energy started crashing.

Fatigue became constant.

I couldn’t stay awake playing with my kids. My body was stiff, aching, and 80 pounds heavier than it should have been. Nights of poor sleep left me foggy and drained.

I was still “around”—but I wasn’t present. And that hurt the most. Because the one thing I swore I’d give my daughters was a father who showed up with his whole self. Instead, they were getting leftovers.

It all came to a head at the swimming pool. I jumped in with my girls, hit my toe on concrete, and watched the water around me turn red like tomato soup.

Embarrassing, painful—and a wake-up call I couldn’t ignore. Around the same time, a close friend lost two brothers to sudden heart attacks.

Then COVID hit, and made me question every thing that I thought I knew about health.
